Japan Amends an Intellectual Property Protection Act

Japan has recently notified the WTO on issuance of its newly amended Act on Protection of the Names of Specific Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Products and Foodstuffs. 


In the notification, the Act was classified under Industrial Property and Geographical Indications legislatios. The purpose of the Act was also described as "to secure the profits of producers of specific agricultural, forestry and fishery products and foodstuffs by establishing a system concerning the protection of the names of specific sgricultural, sorestry and fishery products and foodstuffs based on the Annex 1C (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) of the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization, and thereby to contribute to the development of agricultural, forestry and fishery industries and relevant industries as well as to protect the interests of consumers".
